Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 E-Tron Electric Vehicles Recalled for Battery Issue
Electric vehicles are gaining popularity, but even they are not immune to issues. Recently, Volkswagen and Audi have issued a recall for their ID.4 and Q4 E-Tron models due to a problem with their 12-volt batteries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 13,769 vehicles are being recalled, including a mix of 2024 VW ID.4 and 2024-2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback models. The issue stems from the 12-volt battery not charging properly, even when the high-voltage battery pack is fully charged. This could result in starting issues, power loss, or electronic malfunctions if the 12-volt battery drains while the vehicle is in operation.

2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron
This issue can occur even in relatively new 12-volt batteries due to condensation forming within the onboard charger, leading to damage to a printed circuit board. As a result, the DC/DC converter may fail, preventing the 12-volt battery from charging.
If a fault is detected with the 12-volt battery, the NHTSA assures that the vehicle will display warnings to the driver and experience reduced driving functions. The solution to this problem is the replacement of the onboard charger, which will be done free of charge by authorized dealers.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters from VW and Audi starting April 29. For VW customers, contact the customer service department at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 93CJ. Audi customers can reach their customer service at 1-800-253-2834, mentioning recall number 93FR.

2024 Volkswagen ID.4
Volkswagen recently resumed deliveries of the ID.4 after addressing a door-handle issue that caused a production halt. The 2025 model comes with some upgrades and a slightly higher cost due to temporary unavailability of the smaller battery pack.
Previous model years of the ID.4 and Q4 have faced other recalls for various issues, including instrument panels and screen malfunctions.
