Tesla’s Head of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, recently revealed that some of the anticipated features of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving platform version 14.3 have already been partially integrated into the current build of version 14.2. This update aligns with CEO Elon Musk’s vision of incorporating reasoning capabilities into the FSD system to create a more “sentient” driving experience.
During Tesla’s Q3 Earnings Call in October, Musk hinted at the future capabilities of Full Self-Driving, emphasizing the role of reasoning in decision-making processes. He mentioned scenarios where the vehicle would autonomously choose a parking spot, drop passengers off at the store entrance, and navigate through parking lots with precision. Musk’s ambitious goal was for the car to feel “sentient” by version 14.3.
Surprisingly, the latest iteration of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software, version 14.2.2.2, is already showcasing elements of this reasoning functionality. Despite the impressive progress, there are still areas that require improvement, with logic enhancements planned for future updates to enhance decision-making capabilities and overall user experience.
In a recent announcement, Elluswamy confirmed that reasoning features have been integrated into navigation route changes during construction and parking options. He also hinted at additional reasoning functionalities being rolled out in the first quarter of the year, promising further advancements in autonomous driving technology.
Parking improvements, initially mentioned in the release notes for v14.2, have started making their way to Tesla vehicles, indicating a gradual implementation of new features. As reasoning becomes more integral to the Full Self-Driving suite, drivers can expect improved routing, navigation, and overall operational efficiency, addressing common concerns among Tesla owners.
Despite the remarkable progress, Tesla acknowledges the need for continued enhancements before achieving completely unsupervised Full Self-Driving capabilities. With a focus on reasoning and logic-based decision-making, Tesla aims to deliver a seamless and intuitive driving experience that surpasses current industry standards.
