Deutsche Telekom Partners with Starlink to Eliminate Mobile Dead Zones in Europe
Deutsche Telekom has recently announced a groundbreaking partnership with Starlink, aiming to eliminate mobile “dead zones” across Europe using direct-to-cell satellite technology. This collaboration comes as a solution for providing connectivity in remote areas where traditional cell towers face challenges in construction due to environmental regulations or difficult terrain.
The planned rollout of the service is scheduled for 2028 in several European markets, including Germany. Once operational, compatible smartphones will seamlessly switch to Starlink’s satellite network when a terrestrial signal is lost, ensuring uninterrupted access to data, video, voice, and text messaging for users.
Abdu Mudesir, Deutsche Telekom’s Board Member for Product and Technology, expressed the company’s commitment to ensuring reliable connectivity in remote areas. He stated, “We want to ensure reliable connectivity for our customers in those areas as well. That is why we are strategically complementing our network with satellite-to-mobile connectivity.”
The technical integration of the service will leverage Starlink’s Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) spectrum and the next-generation V2 satellite constellation. Stephanie Bednarek, VP of Starlink Sales, highlighted that this partnership marks a significant milestone for Europe, offering broadband directly to mobile phones and expanding data, voice, and messaging capabilities.
In addition to enhancing daily convenience in rural areas, the partnership aims to bolster network resilience during natural disasters or power outages. By 2028, a significant increase in the number of compatible devices in Europe is anticipated, ensuring a broad user base at the launch of the service.
Despite Deutsche Telekom’s existing 5G coverage of nearly 90% of Germany’s landmass, the integration of Starlink’s satellite technology will serve as a safety net for areas with connectivity gaps. This integrated approach is designed to create a future-proof network that combines the strengths of terrestrial and satellite connectivity.
Deutsche Telekom, as the parent company of T-Mobile US, has been at the forefront of innovative partnerships in the telecommunications industry. T-Mobile US was the first launch partner for Starlink Direct to Cell, showcasing the company’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies for enhanced connectivity solutions.
Overall, the partnership between Deutsche Telekom and Starlink promises to revolutionize connectivity in Europe, bridging the gap in mobile coverage and ensuring seamless communication for users across diverse landscapes and challenging environments.
