Chrysler has put a hold on the development of its first electric vehicle (EV), which was initially scheduled to be launched in 2026. This decision has raised concerns about the timeline for the release of the EV and its future prospects.
The electric crossover, internally known as C6X (CA), was expected to be unveiled next year. However, suppliers involved in the project were recently informed to halt all expenditures as the program has been suspended indefinitely. This setback comes after Chrysler made significant changes to the design of the vehicle, scrapping the original concept that had been in development for over a year and a half.
Originally, the Chrysler EV was anticipated to be a production version of the Airflow concept. However, Stellantis design chief Ralph Gilles announced a complete overhaul of the design, stating that the upcoming EV would be a departure from the previously showcased concepts. The brand later introduced the Halcyon concept, which embodies a new design language and serves as a preview for Chrysler’s second EV.
Chrysler’s CEO, Chris Fuell, confirmed the suspension of the electric crossover program, mentioning that the vehicle is still in the works and will be inspired by the Halcyon concept. While specific details about the EV were not disclosed, it is expected to share the same 400-volt STLA Large platform with the new Dodge Charger EV.
The delay in the Chrysler EV’s development highlights the brand’s need for new models in its lineup, as it currently only offers the Pacifica and Voyager models. The Pacifica, a plug-in hybrid minivan, has been relatively successful in the market, but Chrysler’s limited product range underscores the importance of introducing new electric vehicles to remain competitive.
As the automotive industry continues to shift towards electrification, Chrysler’s focus on developing EVs is crucial for its long-term success. The upcoming electric crossover, once launched, is expected to feature a 100-kilowatt-hour battery and offer an EPA range of over 300 miles. With the automotive landscape evolving rapidly, Chrysler’s entry into the electric vehicle market will be closely watched by industry experts and consumers alike.
