Chevrolet, a subsidiary of General Motors, has been on a roll with its electric vehicle (EV) sales in the United States. In the first five months of this year, Chevrolet managed to outperform Ford in the EV market, becoming the second-best-selling EV brand in the country, just behind the reigning champion, Tesla.
With over 37,000 EVs sold in the U.S., Chevrolet has been making significant strides in the EV segment. General Motors, Chevy’s parent company, sold a total of 62,000 EVs during the same period, thanks to its diverse portfolio of 13 different EV models. The Chevrolet Equinox EV emerged as the best-selling EV for GM in the first five months of 2025.
The success of Chevrolet in the EV market comes at a time when the automotive industry is facing challenges such as tariffs and the increasing difficulty of sourcing affordable raw materials. Despite these obstacles, Chevrolet managed to achieve a 14% growth in EV sales in the first quarter, primarily driven by the popularity of models like the Equinox EV and Blazer EV.
GM’s EV sales reached new heights in May, marking the second-best month in history for the company. With a remarkable 94% year-over-year growth in the first quarter, GM’s EV market share more than doubled in April and May, reaching 15.5%. This surge in sales has brought GM’s overall market share to 17%.
Rory Harvey, executive VP and president of global markets at GM, expressed optimism about the company’s performance, stating that customers are responding positively to their range of electric and gas-powered vehicles. In the first two months of the second quarter, GM witnessed a doubling of EV sales compared to the same period last year.
However, despite GM’s impressive growth in the EV market, dethroning Tesla as the top EV company in America remains a challenging task. In the first quarter alone, Tesla sold an estimated 128,100 EVs in the U.S., doubling GM’s sales in the first five months. While Tesla experienced a slight decrease in sales, GM and Chevrolet have been consistently improving their numbers month after month.
As the competition intensifies, GM faces an uphill battle in surpassing Tesla’s dominance in the EV market. With Tesla introducing new models like the refreshed Model Y and the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive version, the competition is expected to heat up in the coming months. The race for the best-selling EV company in the U.S. is far from over, but one thing is certain – the competition is fiercer than ever before.
