Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world’s largest battery maker, has introduced a groundbreaking new battery for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). The CATL Freevoy battery boasts an impressive range of 248 miles on pure electric mode and can add 173 miles in just 10 minutes of fast charging. This new hybrid battery is set to revolutionize the market and enhance the efficiency of PHEVs and EREVs.
CATL’s Freevoy battery utilizes a new type of cathode and electrolyte to achieve its impressive range. The company claims that the battery is mostly unaffected by freezing temperatures due to the use of sodium ions. This feature ensures that the battery can operate even in extreme cold conditions, making it a reliable option for drivers in various climates.
The Freevoy battery’s advanced technology includes a surface treatment on the cathode and a high-voltage liquid that forms a protective layer, reducing unwanted chemical reactions and improving efficiency. The battery also features tiny energized particles that facilitate the movement of lithium ions, increasing performance. CATL has developed software that enhances the battery’s state of charge accuracy by 40%, allowing the vehicle to utilize its power more effectively and achieve a range of over 248 miles.
One of the key advantages of the Freevoy battery is its use of sodium ions, which are known for their resilience in cold climates. The battery can operate in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius and charge at -30 degrees Celsius, ensuring smooth performance even in freezing conditions. This makes the Freevoy battery a reliable option for drivers in regions with harsh winters.
Several automakers have already adopted the Freevoy battery, including Li Auto and Avatr. In the near future, around 30 hybrid models from major EV manufacturers like Geely, Chery, GAC, and Voyah are expected to launch with the Freevoy battery pack. This widespread adoption of the new hybrid battery signifies a shift towards more efficient and reliable PHEVs and EREVs in the market.
CATL’s Chief Technology Officer, Gao Huan, announced the new battery in Beijing, touting it as the world’s first hybrid battery with a range of 400 kilometers. The Freevoy battery’s innovative technology and impressive performance metrics position it as a game-changer in the electric vehicle industry, paving the way for a new era of hybrid vehicles with enhanced range and efficiency.
