DartSolar, a Los Angeles-based startup, is making waves in the electric vehicle industry with its innovative expandable solar array designed to add extra range to any EV. The company claims that their six-panel setup can provide up to 20 miles of range per day, just from soaking up the sun’s rays.
While the concept of solar-powered vehicles is not new, DartSolar’s approach is unique in that it can be added to any existing electric car. The setup includes six low-profile photovoltaic panels, each with a power rating of 160 watts, for a total of 960 watts. When fully closed, only two panels are exposed to the sun, generating a maximum of 320 watts. However, the array can be expanded by sliding out four additional panels, two in the front and two in the back, to increase power output as needed.
The lightweight aluminum frame, including the roof bars, weighs 87 pounds, making it easy to install on any vehicle. The solar array is connected to an external power pack, similar to an EcoFlow Delta, which can then transfer power to the car’s battery using a Level 1 or Level 2 EV charger.
DartSolar claims that their system can provide anywhere from 10 to 20 miles of range per day, with an estimated energy output of around 5 kWh. The kit comes with 3D printable parts and stainless steel telescopic tubes, and the company guarantees a lifespan of over 10 years for the entire setup.
The full price of the DartSolar expandable solar array, including the backup battery, is $3,450. However, the company is currently offering an early-bird promotion where customers can reserve the setup for a refundable fee of $99 and pay the remaining $2,950 when the product is ready to ship next year.
Overall, DartSolar’s innovative solar array offers a practical and environmentally friendly solution for EV owners looking to extend their range and reduce their reliance on traditional charging methods. With the promise of free, sun-powered driving, it’s no wonder that this startup is generating buzz in the electric vehicle community.
