BMW made headlines last year by surpassing both Mercedes-Benz and Audi in electric vehicle (EV) sales. The German automaker, known for its innovative designs and cutting-edge technology, sold a staggering 368,475 EVs worldwide in 2024. This figure excludes sales from its Mini and Rolls-Royce brands. In comparison, Mercedes-Benz sold 185,059 EVs, while Audi delivered over 164,000 fully-electric models. Combined, BMW outsold its competitors by roughly 20,000 units.
This achievement underscores BMW’s successful strategy of offering electric alternatives to its traditional gas-powered models. The company saw a 13.5% increase in global EV sales last year, setting a new record in the United States. In contrast, Mercedes-Benz and Audi experienced declines of 23.1% and 8% in EV sales, respectively.
The BMW Group, which includes Mini and Rolls-Royce, also saw growth in the EV segment. Mini sold 56,171 electric vehicles, marking a 24.3% increase from the previous year. Rolls-Royce, on the other hand, set a new record by selling 1,890 Spectre EVs, a significant jump from the 326 units delivered in 2023.
Overall, the BMW Group sold nearly 2.5 million cars in 2024, with EVs accounting for 17.4% of total sales, up from 14.7% in 2023. While this is a commendable achievement, the company aims to have 50% of its sales come from EVs by the end of the decade. This ambitious goal hinges on the success of the upcoming Neue Klasse models, starting with the i3 and iX3, which are electric versions of the popular 3 Series sedan and X3 crossover.
The Neue Klasse lineup, set to debut later this year, promises over 300 miles of range on a full charge, with some models offering up to 560 miles for the longest-range versions. These vehicles will feature 800-volt battery packs for ultra-fast charging and numerous efficiency enhancements compared to current EVs. BMW plans to introduce at least six new EVs by 2028, all designed to push the boundaries of electric mobility.
In conclusion, BMW’s leadership in the EV market showcases its commitment to sustainable transportation and cutting-edge technology. With a strong focus on innovation and performance, BMW is poised to continue driving the future of electric mobility.
