The Tesla Model Y Leads Europe in Electric Car Sales Despite Challenges
In 2025, the Tesla Model Y emerged as the top-selling electric car in Europe, surpassing all other EV models by a significant margin. This achievement is particularly notable considering the hurdles faced by Tesla throughout the year, including production transitions, increased competition, and growing anti-Elon Musk sentiments.
According to data compiled by JATO Dynamics and reported by Swedish outlet Allt om Elbil, the Tesla Model Y recorded 149,805 registrations across Europe in 2025, securing the top spot among all electric car models in the region.
Despite a 28% decline in registrations year-over-year, the Model Y managed to outperform its closest competitor by over 50,000 units. The Skoda Elroq came in second with 93,870 registrations, followed by the Tesla Model 3 at 85,393 units. Renault’s electric Renault 5 also made its mark with 85,101 registrations, claiming the fourth spot.
Other notable performers included Volkswagen’s ID.4, ID.3, and ID.7, as well as the BMW iX1 and Kia EV3, which saw significant growth following their partial-year launches in 2024.
While the Model Y dominated the individual model rankings, Volkswagen managed to surpass Tesla as the top EV brand in Europe for 2025. Volkswagen delivered 274,278 electric cars in the region, marking a 56% increase from the previous year, with the Volkswagen ID.7 driving much of this growth. In comparison, Tesla sold 236,357 electric vehicles in Europe, experiencing a 27% decline year-over-year.
JATO Dynamics highlighted that Tesla’s limited and aging model range faces stiff competition in Europe from both traditional European automakers and a rising number of Chinese competitors.
Nevertheless, the Model Y’s strong performance underscores Tesla’s continued dominance in Europe’s rapidly evolving EV market, despite the challenges and changes in the industry landscape.
