A renewable energy company based in Saanich, British Columbia is facing a major setback after the provincial government cut Tesla products from the BC Hydro energy rebate program. High Tide Energy, which specializes in battery storage and solar panel installations, received the news with little warning on March 12, 2025.
General Manager Josh Shepherd expressed his frustration at the sudden change, stating that the company was caught off guard by the decision. The removal of Tesla products, including the popular Powerwall home battery system, from the rebate program has left High Tide Energy with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of inventory that may not easily move.
The decision to exclude Tesla products from the program was announced by Premier David Eby, who cited U.S. tariffs and political concerns as the primary reasons for the change. Eby specifically mentioned Elon Musk, stating that British Columbians would not want taxpayer money going to the billionaire CEO.
The impact of this decision is significant for High Tide Energy, as many of their clients had signed up for installations specifically because of the rebate. With deposits already paid and installations in progress, the company now faces the challenge of finding alternative products to offer their customers.
Despite the setback, Shepherd remains committed to finding solutions for his clients. While High Tide Energy will now shift their focus to other products, Tesla remains their largest client. Shepherd emphasized the importance of Tesla’s Powerwall systems in reducing strain on BC Hydro’s grid during peak hours.
The move to prioritize Canadian-made products in rebate programs is part of BC Hydro’s strategy to support local businesses and reduce reliance on U.S.-made goods. However, the sudden nature of the decision has left businesses like High Tide Energy reeling from the financial implications.
As the company navigates this unexpected change, Shepherd remains hopeful that they can find a way to continue serving their clients and supporting renewable energy initiatives in the region. Despite the challenges ahead, High Tide Energy is determined to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity.
