The Audi Q6 E-Tron electric crossover wasn’t designed for extreme off-road adventures, but a new concept car from the German automaker is exploring the potential for a more rugged electric vehicle.
Recently, Audi unveiled the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept on social media. While details on the features are scarce, it appears that the concept utilizes portal axles to enhance ground clearance and accommodate larger tires.

Portal axles, unlike traditional axles, position the wheel hub below the axle hub with gears in between. This setup not only increases ground clearance but also allows for a wider stance and lower gearing capabilities beyond the differential.
Previously, Mercedes-Benz explored portal axles in a concept version of its EQC electric crossover. This concept was intended to pave the way for an electric G-Class. It remains to be seen if Audi has similar plans for an off-road production model.

In 2023, Audi teased a more rugged EV with the Activesphere concept, based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) shared with the Q6 E-Tron. The PPE platform, known for its high-power charging capabilities, is also utilized in models like the A6 E-Tron and the electric Porsche Macan.
The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept is derived from the Sportback body style of the Q6 E-Tron, which is not yet available in the U.S. The standard SUV body style, offered as a 2025 model starting at $65,095, provides up to 321 miles of EPA range. Real-world tests in California have indicated that achieving this range is feasible.
