Aptera, a California-based startup, is once again reaching out to the public for funding. The company is aiming to raise enough capital to bring its three-wheeled solar electric vehicle to the market next year. This initiative follows a successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this year, which saw Aptera raise $135 million from 19,000 investors.
However, developing and manufacturing a car from scratch is a costly endeavor, and Aptera still needs around $60 million to finalize the production of its two-seater solar EV. Interested individuals can invest in the startup with a minimum investment of $1,000, purchasing shares priced at $14.80 each.
Aptera is currently testing its first production-intent prototype, which features an inboard drive unit from Vitesco Technologies instead of the originally planned hub motor. This change was necessary to meet production timelines. The company aims to begin production of the solar EV next year, with an initial batch of approximately 7,000 units, pending the successful completion of the fundraising target.
The solar-powered three-wheeler boasts small solar panels covering the entire body, allowing it to potentially gain up to 11,000 miles of range per year from solar energy. The vehicle can travel up to 400 miles on a full charge and offers an estimated price range of $25,900 to $48,300, depending on the configuration.
Overall, Aptera’s innovative approach to sustainable transportation is garnering attention, and with continued support from investors, the company hopes to bring its unique solar EV to market in the near future.
