Automaker-backed charging company Ionna has recently launched its first “Rechargery” in North Carolina, with plans for 100 more sites in the pipeline, some of which are set to open this week. This innovative venture aims to revolutionize the electric vehicle charging experience by incorporating Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology into on-site convenience stores, allowing customers to pick up items and leave without the need to go through a traditional checkout process.
Ionna, supported by major automotive manufacturers such as BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis, and Toyota, is setting ambitious goals for the future. The company plans to have 30,000 charging ports across the country by 2030, supporting both Combined Charging Standard (CCS) and North American Charging Standard (NACS) vehicles without the need for adapters.
The flagship “Rechargeries” by Ionna will offer a range of amenities to enhance the charging experience, including covered charging stalls, on-site restrooms, lounges, and food and beverage options. Additionally, partner Rechargeries will feature concessions and lounges managed by external partners like Sheetz, while “Relay” sites will offer more basic facilities such as restrooms, lounges, canopies, and limited food options.
The first flagship location of Ionna is now operational in Apex, NC, with more locations on the way. The company has already secured contracts for over 100 sites, with Rechargeries in Houston, Texas; Abilene, Kansas; and Willcox, Arizona opening this week. As part of its expansion efforts, Ionna is introducing new technology like Amazon’s Just Walk Out feature to enhance the customer experience.
Just Walk Out technology enables customers to shop at the convenience store within the Rechargery and exit without the need for manual checkout. Using a combination of cameras and sensors, the AI-powered system tracks the items customers pick up, allowing for a seamless shopping experience. While the technology has faced some criticism for its reliance on workers in India to monitor customer behavior, Amazon has clarified that human intervention is primarily used to enhance the AI model and improve accuracy.
