The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) is making waves with its recent introduction of free Wi-Fi on the MV Columbia ferry, powered by Starlink. This innovative pilot program is a game-changer for passengers and crew traveling between Bellingham, Washington, and Southeast Alaska.
Commissioner Ryan Anderson of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) emphasized the importance of connectivity for both crew members and passengers. He stated, “For our crew, staying connected to family and modern life during off-hours is essential, and this effort reflects our commitment to their well-being and job satisfaction. For passengers, especially those on multi-day voyages like the Bellingham run, Wi-Fi enables continuity in communication, and the ability to share the unique experiences of sailing Alaska’s National Scenic Byway in real time.”
With Wi-Fi now available throughout the ferry, including lounges, staterooms, the solarium, and crew areas, passengers and crew members can stay connected during their journey. During the first week of the program, over 450 users connected to the Wi-Fi, demonstrating a strong demand for reliable internet on multi-day voyages.
Setting up the Wi-Fi system on the MV Columbia was no small feat. The AMHS team installed over 37 access points and ran thousands of feet of cable during the ship’s recent overhaul in Ketchikan. Despite technical and logistical challenges, the team ensured strong and secure wireless coverage for all passengers and crew members.
This initiative is part of a larger plan to modernize Alaska’s ferry system. With federal funding, AMHS intends to expand Starlink-powered Wi-Fi to other vessels, including the MV Aurora and MV LeConte, making connectivity a standard feature for all travelers on the Alaska Marine Highway.
As Alaska leads the way in providing cutting-edge technology for its ferry system, other regions may soon follow suit. Hopefully, BC Ferries in British Columbia, Canada, will take note and consider offering Starlink on major routes to enhance the travel experience for passengers as well as crew members. With the success of the Wi-Fi program on the MV Columbia, it’s clear that reliable internet connectivity is essential for modern-day travel.
