Alaska Airlines recently announced a groundbreaking plan to implement SpaceX’s Starlink internet across its entire fleet, with installations set to begin in 2026 and expected completion by 2027. The airline is set to offer this cutting-edge in-flight Wi-Fi at no additional cost to passengers, providing what they claim to be the fastest and most reliable connectivity available in the skies today.
This move will make Alaska Airlines the first U.S. carrier to equip its long-haul flights departing from Seattle with Starlink, ensuring gate-to-gate connectivity on regional, narrowbody, and widebody aircraft. Following in the footsteps of Hawaiian Airlines, which adopted Starlink on its Airbus fleet last year, Alaska aims to elevate the passenger experience with top-tier connectivity.
Ben Minicucci, President and CEO of Alaska Air Group, expressed pride in offering passengers the fastest and most reliable in-flight internet, thanks to the partnership with Starlink. Additionally, Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Operations at SpaceX, highlighted the collaboration’s ability to provide passengers with unparalleled high-speed internet during their flights.
Major carriers such as United Airlines and Qatar Airways have also committed to implementing Starlink for in-flight connectivity, showcasing the industry’s growing interest in this advanced technology. Reports have even surfaced about Saudi Arabia’s flagship carrier nearing a significant deal to integrate Starlink into their in-flight Wi-Fi offerings.
Alaska Airlines promises passengers the ability to stream, game, message, and collaborate in real-time at speeds up to 500 Mbps with latency under 99 ms, significantly outperforming traditional satellite Wi-Fi systems used by most airlines. Starlink’s innovative, electronically steered antennas not only enhance connectivity but also reduce drag and weight, leading to estimated fuel savings of 800,000 gallons annually for the airline.
The rollout of Starlink across Alaska Airlines’ fleet not only enhances the passenger experience but also solidifies Starlink’s position as the new standard for in-flight connectivity. This development represents a significant milestone in the aviation industry’s ongoing efforts to provide cutting-edge technology and superior services to travelers worldwide.
