Airstream, a well-known manufacturer of iconic aluminum travel trailers, has stepped into the electric era with the introduction of their new Basecamp Xe model. This electric camper trailer is based on the regular Basecamp model but comes equipped with a 10.3-kWh battery pack and an array of solar panels on the roof to power all the appliances inside.
Unlike the larger and more expensive Lightship RV, the Basecamp Xe does not have powered wheels. Instead, it relies on its battery pack to power all the amenities onboard. The trailer features a Battle Born lithium battery pack that powers a fully inverted 30-amp electrical system, along with 600 watts of solar panels (upgradable to 900 W) and a 3000 W inverter. Additionally, there is a 20-pound propane tank for backup heating options.
Measuring 20 feet in length with one axle, the Basecamp Xe can comfortably accommodate up to four people in a dedicated sleeping space at the back. The front dinette can also be converted into additional sleeping space if needed. The trailer includes a wet bath with a shower, sink, and toilet, as well as a removable induction stove for cooking. Optional features such as a composting toilet, microwave, and air conditioner are available, with the heater being an optional add-on.
While the exact battery depletion time is not specified, the trailer’s energy consumption will vary based on appliance usage. Under normal conditions, a full battery charge should last for a day or two of camping. The Basecamp Xe starts at $76,900, making it $6,000 more expensive than a brand-new luxury EV sedan like the Lucid Air. However, when compared to the non-electric Basecamp model, the Xe comes with a $22,000 premium.
In terms of cost-effectiveness, purchasing the Basecamp Xe for camping adventures may not seem practical compared to hotel stays. However, avid campers and outdoor enthusiasts who value the freedom of traveling with their accommodations may find the investment worthwhile. While the price tag may seem steep, Airstream’s electric camper trailer offers a unique and convenient way to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing modern amenities.
