Tesla’s Camera Cleaning Feature Limited to New Model Y, More Models to Follow
Tesla has introduced a new camera cleaning feature with FSD V14, specifically targeting the area used by front-facing cameras. This innovative Robotaxi-style cleaning system utilizes multiple wipes and fluid spraying to ensure optimal cleanliness.
While this feature is designed to clean the windshield area efficiently, it is currently only available on the new Model Y. Tesla AI Engineer Yun-Ta Tsai confirmed this limitation, citing the need for extensive engineering work to ensure seamless integration.
Rollout Plan
The limited rollout of this feature is due to the intricate coordination required for fluid bursts and wiper timing. Tesla is also taking into account factors like vehicle speed and wind conditions to optimize the cleaning process.
While some may view this level of engineering as excessive, Tesla is likely addressing potential issues caused by dirt and grime accumulation.
Legacy Model Support
For legacy Model Y vehicles with HW4, the transition to the new camera cleaning feature should be straightforward, as Tesla did not make significant changes to the motor and actuator components.
Cybertruck Considerations
With the Cybertruck featuring a large wiper system, Tesla may need to develop a unique cleaning solution to maintain optimal visibility. The challenge lies in keeping the massive windshield free of debris, especially given the vehicle’s unique design.
As Tesla continues to roll out updates like FSD V14.1.4 for other models, the camera cleaning feature is likely to be included in future releases, showcasing the ongoing innovation from the Tesla AI Engineering team.
Tonight was the first time I experienced the new Tesla FSD V14 windshield wiper front camera self-cleaning feature.
Tesla: “Added automatic narrow field washing to provide rapid and efficient front camera self-cleaning, and optimize aerodynamics wash at higher speed.”
