Tesla has made a surprising move by bringing back the turn signal stalk for the Model 3 in China. This decision comes after the company removed the stalk with the refresh of the all-electric sedan last year. However, if you want to revert back to the traditional turn signal stalk, it will come at a cost.
In 2024, Tesla introduced the Model 3 “Highland,” a refreshed version of the vehicle that included significant changes. One of the most noticeable changes was the elimination of the turn signal stalk, replaced with turn signal buttons on the steering wheel. While some drivers found the buttons convenient and enjoyed the minimalist look, others struggled to adapt to the new feature.
Now, Tesla is offering Model 3 owners in China the option to replace the turn signal buttons with stalks for a price of ¥ 2,499, approximately $350. The modification is included in the purchase price and can be installed by a Tesla Service Center. This service is available for Model 3 vehicles without stalks manufactured after February 7, 2025, with plans to extend the service to older models in the future.
Tesla emphasizes that installation should be performed by a Service Center or a trained professional to avoid any damages resulting from self-installation. The company has been closely monitoring feedback on the cockpit design of its vehicles, offering drivers the opportunity to customize their driving experience. This approach was seen previously with the Model S and Model X, where Tesla allowed drivers to revert back to traditional steering wheels after introducing the controversial yoke steering wheel.
The decision to reintroduce the turn signal stalk for the Model 3 in China highlights Tesla’s commitment to customer satisfaction and customization. While the move towards a minimalist cockpit design may align with Tesla’s vision of autonomous driving in the future, providing options for traditional controls demonstrates the company’s flexibility and responsiveness to driver preferences.
