Tesla’s latest addition to its lineup, the Model Y L, has been making waves in China with its impressive performance. The all-electric SUV managed to ace the challenging “moose test” at a speed of 72 mph with six adults on board, showcasing its exceptional handling capabilities. This feat is a testament to Tesla’s commitment to engineering excellence, as very few SUVs in its class can match this level of agility.
Launched in China starting at 339,000 yuan (approximately $47,000 USD), the Model Y L is designed to cater to families with its three-row, six-seat configuration. It features a longer wheelbase and a stretched body compared to the standard Model Y, along with adjustable second- and third-row seats, a larger 16-inch central touchscreen, and a comfort-oriented suspension. Despite its larger size, Tesla has managed to maintain the vehicle’s agility through tuned suspension and steering, ensuring a composed driving experience even under extreme conditions.
The China-market Model Y L boasts an estimated EPA range of 327 miles, with an overwhelming response from consumers as orders surpassed 35,000 on launch day alone. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in September 2025, exclusively in China for now. However, there are hints of a potential European launch as prototypes have been spotted testing in Germany. U.S. buyers, on the other hand, may have to wait until late 2026 or beyond for the Model Y L to hit North American production lines, according to Elon Musk.
Tesla’s success in the moose test comes at a crucial time as the company faces stiff competition from local automakers in China. With rivals like BYD and Li Auto offering more affordable EV options and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology still awaiting broader approval in the country, the Model Y L’s exceptional safety performance serves as a reminder of Tesla’s engineering prowess. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, Tesla remains a dominant force, setting new standards for performance and safety in the industry.
