Tesla Teases Potential Arrival of Grok AI on Intel-Based Vehicles
Tesla recently announced that XAI’s Grok feature will be included in the upcoming 2025.26 software update. However, the catch is that it will initially only be compatible with AMD-based vehicles, leaving out older Intel-based cars. Despite this limitation, there are hints that Grok may eventually be extended to Intel vehicles in the future.
Clues from Tesla’s website and Elon Musk’s repost suggest that the current hardware restriction may not be permanent. There are indications that Grok could potentially be made available for Intel MCUs in due time.
Decoding the Messages
On Tesla’s official homepage, the description of Grok mentions that the requirements are subject to change and specifically states that Grok “currently requires an AMD processor.” This wording implies a possible shift towards supporting Intel-based vehicles in the future.
Moreover, Tesla’s Grok FAQ page hints at the possibility of expanding Grok to additional Tesla vehicles through over-the-air software updates. This signals that Tesla is exploring the option of bringing Grok to Intel-based cars or expanding its compatibility.
Understanding Grok
Grok is a feature that offloads most of its processing to the server, where it transcribes the driver’s audio, generates a response, and sends it back to the vehicle. While older vehicles may not support certain visual features of Grok, there is optimism about their potential inclusion in the future.
Potential Expansion
Elon Musk’s repost of a tweet suggesting that older vehicles could receive Grok in the future adds fuel to the speculation. While there is no guarantee that all Tesla models, especially those with outdated hardware, will support Grok, there is hope for updates or upgrades to enable compatibility.
Looking Ahead
If Grok expands to more vehicles in the future, it is logical to consider the large number of Teslas equipped with Intel Atom processors, such as MCU2. Despite not being as powerful as newer AMD units, Intel-based vehicles remain capable, as demonstrated by previous feature updates like weather radar.
Currently, Grok is only available in the US and has just begun rolling out to a small percentage of Tesla owners. The adoption rate is expected to rise as Tesla continues the rollout. Owners of Intel-based vehicles can remain hopeful that Tesla will eventually extend support to their vehicles.
