The upcoming Volvo XC70 has been revealed ahead of its official debut through China’s MIIT, giving us a glimpse of what to expect from this new PHEV-only SUV that fits between the XC60 and XC90 models. With two battery pack options available, the XC70 aims to cater to the growing demand for big-battery, long-range plug-in hybrids in the Chinese market.
The larger battery variant of the XC70 boasts a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry with a capacity of 39.63 kilowatt-hours, providing an impressive claimed electric range of 112 miles (180 kilometers) on the Chinese test cycle. On the other hand, the smaller battery option features a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry with a capacity of 21.22 kWh, offering a claimed range of 62 miles (100 km).
While specific power and performance figures for the XC70 have not been officially released, it is expected to share mechanical similarities with the Lynk & Co 08 model. The top trim of the XC70 is anticipated to deliver almost 600 hp along with a substantial torque figure, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 124 mph. The vehicle is likely to feature all-wheel drive and deliver a thrilling driving experience.
Built on the CMA 2.0 platform, the XC70 is equipped to support DC fast charging for added convenience. Although exact charging power details are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to offer efficient charging capabilities similar to the Lynk & Co 08 model.
While Volvo’s plans for the XC70 beyond the Chinese market remain unclear, there is speculation that the model may eventually make its way to Europe alongside the Lynk & Co 08. As the largest-battery PHEV available in Europe, the XC70 could attract significant attention in the region. However, due to its manufacturing location in China, a U.S. release seems unlikely at this time.
Keep an eye out for the official reveal of the Volvo XC70, where more details about the SUV and its international availability are expected to be disclosed. With its impressive performance and advanced technology, the XC70 is poised to make a significant impact in the plug-in hybrid SUV segment.
