In the latest J.D. Power U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, Tesla has once again emerged as the top performer in home electric vehicle (EV) charging satisfaction. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Tesla has led the Level 2 permanently mounted charger category, scoring an impressive 776 out of 1,000 points. Following closely behind are Emporia and Wallbox, with scores of 763 and 756, respectively.
Despite Tesla’s continued dominance in the home charging market, overall satisfaction with home charging has seen a slight decline. Owners reported lower satisfaction with both Level 2 portable and mounted chargers compared to the previous year, citing issues such as slower charging speeds, higher energy costs, and app-related problems. Level 2 portable chargers received an average score of 714, while mounted versions scored 733 — a decrease of 21 and 11 points from the previous year, respectively.
According to the study, Level 2 wall-mounted units continue to offer the best charging experience, but also come with the highest number of reported problems. On average, users reported 39 issues per 100 units, with app and Wi-Fi connectivity problems accounting for nearly one-third of complaints.
Brent Gruber, executive director of EV intelligence at J.D. Power, highlighted the challenges facing EV owners, stating, “Home charging is still the most convenient option for EV owners, but challenges like rising electricity costs and connectivity problems are dragging down satisfaction.”
Regional differences in satisfaction were also noted in the study, with EV owners on the West Coast and in the Northeast expressing lower satisfaction with the cost of charging, likely due to higher electricity prices in these regions. On average, EV owners across the U.S. spent $58 on home charging in the past month, a $2 increase from the previous year.
The study revealed that satisfaction levels significantly dropped when owners experienced slower charging speeds, with a decrease of 141 points compared to those who did not encounter any issues.
The data for the study was collected from over 10,000 owners of battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from model years 2019 to 2025, between November 2024 and January 2025.
One standout feature praised by users was the Tesla Wall Connector for its ease of use. Users described the process as simple and convenient, with the ability to easily plug in and walk away, thanks to the seamless functionality of the charger handle.
Overall, while Tesla continues to lead the way in home EV charging satisfaction, there are still challenges and areas for improvement in the market to ensure a seamless charging experience for all EV owners.
