Telo, a new player in the electric truck market, is aiming to revolutionize the industry with its compact yet powerful MT1 model. The company is on a mission to combat the oversized, bloated trucks that currently dominate the market by offering big-truck utility in a package no longer than a Mini Cooper. After months of anticipation, we are finally getting a glimpse of what the final product may look like.
The Fast Lane Truck recently took the Telo MT1 for a brief, low-speed drive in their latest video, giving us a first-hand look at this innovative prototype. While the vehicle is still in the early stages of development, with some features like the screens and controls being temporary, it is clear that Telo is onto something special.
The MT1 boasts a unique design that combines a full five-foot bed with a downsized passenger and frontal area, giving it a distinctive cab-over appearance. With a folding mid-gate similar to the GMC Sierra EV, the Telo can accommodate eight-foot long items, making it a versatile option for hauling cargo. Additionally, with the option to add a tonneau cover, users can safely secure items like surfboards in the bed.
Despite its innovative design, Telo has opted for a more conventional approach when it comes to the powertrain. While the company has developed a proprietary battery pack to maximize space and structural integrity, other powertrain components are off-the-shelf units from suppliers. This decision allows for flexibility in choosing between dual-motor all-wheel drive or single-motor rear-wheel drive configurations, both of which offer reliable performance and traction.
When it comes to charging and range, Telo has focused on practicality and efficiency. The MT1 utilizes 400-volt power components and is expected to support 250-kW charging in real-world conditions, thanks to its solid pack chemistry. The base model offers a range of 260 miles, 300 horsepower, and a starting price of $41,520. For those seeking more range, an upgrade to the long-range version provides 350 miles of range from a 106 kWh battery for an additional cost. Customers can also opt for dual-motor all-wheel drive with 5000 hp for enhanced performance.
Telo claims that the MT1 can haul up to 1,700 lbs of payload and tow 6,600 lbs, though it is not designed for long-range towing. With ambitious production plans set for next year, the company aims to partner with a contract manufacturer to bring the MT1 to market. If Telo can deliver on its promises, the MT1 may just be the solution to the oversized trucks that currently dominate the market. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new development in the electric truck industry.
