Tesla hacker @greentheonly has recently uncovered details about a new hardware version for the Model Y, labeled as “Model Y Reloaded” in internal markings. This updated hardware is designed as a retrofit option for existing Model Y vehicles equipped with HW4, offering new features and enhancements.
One key feature of the “Model Y Reloaded” hardware is the inclusion of a connector for a front bumper camera, suggesting that Tesla is preparing to introduce this feature for retrofitted vehicles. Additionally, the modem is now integrated into the hardware itself rather than being located in a separate Telematics Control Unit (TCU), which streamlines the setup process. The hardware also uses USB 3.0 ports instead of USB-C, reflecting compatibility with older systems in existing vehicles.
Marked as a service replacement unit, this new hardware is clearly intended for updating existing Model Y vehicles rather than for use in new production models. @greentheonly confirmed that the hardware is specifically designed for retrofitting existing HW4-equipped Model Y vehicles, as it uses connectors that are compatible with newer cameras and wiring.
Tesla has also removed previous HW4 versions for the Model Y from its electronic catalog, indicating that the “Reloaded” hardware could completely replace older units in the future. The new Model Y that recently launched in China already has a front bumper camera, and existing Model S and Model X hardware also have a front bumper camera connector.
In the past, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the company would cover the cost of retrofits for HW3 cars to HW4 if Full Self-Driving (FSD) Unsupervised cannot be achieved on HW3. This offer only applies to those who have paid for FSD.
Overall, the “Model Y Reloaded” hardware update represents Tesla’s ongoing commitment to improving and upgrading its vehicles, ensuring that owners have access to the latest technology and features. It will be interesting to see how this new hardware version enhances the driving experience for Model Y owners in the future.
