Kia has issued a recall for 62,872 EV6 electric vehicles due to potential damage to the onboard charging control units, which could lead to a reduced-power driving mode.
The recall affects models from 2022 to 2024, with integrated charging control units that may be damaged by certain electrical loads, preventing them from charging the vehicles’ 12-volt batteries, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The failure of 12-volt battery charging can trigger a fail-safe mode in the vehicle, gradually reducing power if continued to be driven. Warning chimes and dashboard lights will alert drivers to this condition, according to the NHTSA.
The solution involves updating the charging control unit’s software and inspecting the unit and its fuse, with replacement if necessary. All repairs will be carried out by dealerships at no cost to owners. Kia plans to send notification letters to owners on Dec. 13 and can also be contacted at 1-800-333-4542 for more information. The recall reference number is SC327.

Some of the affected vehicles were previously recalled for the same issue but will still require the new recall work to be completed, as confirmed by the NHTSA. The recall also includes EVs from Hyundai and Genesis brands, some of which are undergoing a second recall for this issue.
The EV6 was introduced for the 2022 model year and was a finalist for Green Car Reports Best Car To Buy 2023. Updates for 2025 include larger battery packs, a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, and updated styling. Kia will also manufacture U.S.-market vehicles at its West Point, Georgia, facility.
