Waymo, the self-driving technology company owned by Alphabet, has announced the launch of its newest vehicle, the Ojai (formerly known as the Zeekr RT minivan). After months of testing, Waymo is now ready to invite non-employee passengers to experience the Ojai in select cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. The company plans to offer free rides initially to collect data on the passenger experience before introducing paid rides.
The Ojai marks the debut of Waymo’s sixth generation autonomous vehicle system, following the discontinuation of its previous model, the Jaguar I-Pace. The new system promises to be the smartest and most capable yet, using fewer sensors to reduce costs while enhancing performance. Waymo has also announced partnerships with Hyundai and Toyota for future models.
Collaborating with Chinese automaker Geely, Waymo has designed the Ojai as a purpose-built, passenger-first vehicle. Despite challenges such as tariffs and restrictions on importing vehicles with Chinese software, Waymo has ensured compliance by removing any connected software from the Zeekr vehicles. Geely, known for luxury vehicles in the Chinese market, brings its expertise to the design and production of the Ojai.
The Ojai boasts a spacious cabin with increased legroom, three large screens, charge ports, and cupholders. Accommodating up to four passengers, the vehicle is designed for accessibility with a flat floor, low-step height, braille instructions, and grab bars. It is also easier to maintain and clean, with faster EV charging and improved battery capacity.
Despite these advancements, Waymo faced challenges recently when it suspended freeway driving across all cities due to concerns about vehicle reactions to construction zones. This decision followed incidents of Waymo’s robotaxis driving through flooded roads in Texas at high speeds, prompting a software recall for the entire fleet, including the sixth generation vehicles.
In conclusion, Waymo’s introduction of the Ojai represents a significant milestone in autonomous vehicle technology. With its sixth generation system and partnerships with industry leaders, Waymo continues to lead the way in innovation and passenger safety.
