SpaceX is preparing for the next test flight of its Starship rocket, scheduled for Thursday, May 21. The company has confirmed that both the Starship and its Super Heavy booster have been rolled out to the launch pad at Starbase in Texas for final testing and preparations. The launch window is set to open at 5:30 p.m. CT, with a live webcast scheduled to start about 45 minutes before liftoff on SpaceX.com and on X.
This upcoming flight, known as Flight 12, will mark the debut of a significantly redesigned vehicle. SpaceX has upgraded both the Starship and the Super Heavy booster, along with introducing a new version of the Raptor engine and a newly designed launch pad. The primary goal of this flight is to test all these new components flying together for the first time.
Due to the extensive redesign of the vehicle, the booster will not attempt to fly back to the launch site for a catch this time. Instead, it will aim for a controlled landing burn in the Gulf of America offshore.
The Starship upper stage has a packed test agenda for this flight. It will deploy 20 Starlink simulator satellites, along with two specially modified Starlink satellites that will test hardware planned for the next-generation V3 Starlink constellation. These two satellites will also attempt to scan and photograph Starship’s heat shield during reentry, transmitting the imagery back to operators on the ground.
In addition, SpaceX is intentionally pushing the vehicle to its limits during this flight. This includes a maneuver designed to stress the rear flaps and a banking maneuver that simulates the trajectory future missions returning to Starbase will fly.
SpaceX has advised that the schedule is subject to change, so it is recommended to stay updated on its X account for any updates regarding the test flight.
As SpaceX gears up for this exciting test flight of its Starship rocket, space enthusiasts and industry experts alike are eagerly anticipating the results of this significant milestone in the development of next-generation space technology. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking event.
