SpaceX is gearing up for the twelfth flight test of its Starship rocket, with a launch planned for Tuesday, May 19. The mission will take place at the newly designed launch pad at Starbase, with the window opening at 5:30 p.m. CT.
This upcoming flight signifies a significant milestone for the program as SpaceX introduces the next generation of both the Starship upper stage and the Super Heavy booster. These new vehicles have undergone significant redesigns and are powered by an evolved version of the Raptor engine, all with the goal of achieving full and rapid reusability.
The mission will involve a series of experimental objectives to push the boundaries of the new hardware. The Super Heavy booster will attempt a landing at an offshore point in the Gulf of Mexico instead of returning to the launch site. On the other hand, the Starship upper stage will be carrying 22 Starlink simulators, with two of them dedicated to scanning the ship’s heat shield during flight to gather data for future missions.
In a bold move to test the heat shield’s resilience, SpaceX has intentionally removed one protective tile and painted others white to simulate damage. This will allow operators to observe how the vehicle withstands aerodynamic stress and heat during reentry with these modifications. Additionally, the flight will include a test of a single Raptor engine relighting while in space.
A live webcast of the launch will be available approximately 30 minutes before liftoff on the SpaceX website and through the X app. Given that this is a developmental test, SpaceX has cautioned that the schedule may be subject to change based on technical or weather conditions.
Excitement is building as SpaceX prepares to push the boundaries of space exploration with this upcoming Starship test flight. Stay tuned for updates on this groundbreaking mission.
