The carrier now offers international roaming for its T-Satellite feature, allowing subscribers to access satellite connectivity while travelling through Canada and New Zealand.
This expansion represents a significant milestone for T-Mobile, as it enables users to maintain a connection in geographic dead zones where traditional cell towers cannot reach. In Canada, the satellite service operates through the Rogers network, while One NZ provides the connection in New Zealand. Both international carriers are existing partners with SpaceX, the provider of the Starlink satellite constellation required for the technology to function.
T-Mobile has indicated that it is working with additional global roaming partners to bring satellite support to more destinations around the world in the future. The satellite feature allows users to send text messages, use specific mobile apps, and even make video calls without a traditional cellular signal. Originally tested as a free beta, the service has now transitioned into an official offering.
For subscribers on T-Mobile’s most premium plans, the satellite service is included at no extra cost. Customers on standard plans can access the service as an add-on for $10 per month. Despite the high profile of the technology, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert noted that actual usage has been lower than initially anticipated. Most customers currently utilize the satellite link while visiting national parks or remote wilderness areas.
The system is designed to activate automatically when a device enters an area with no cellular signal, ensuring that essential communication remains available.
