Tesla Continues Expansion in Asia with Launch of Model Y L
Tesla is continuing its expansion across Asia with the introduction of the Model Y L, a long-wheelbase version of its popular electric SUV. Following successful debuts in China and Singapore, the new variant has now made its way to showrooms in Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, joining Australia and New Zealand in offering this upgraded model.
The Model Y L boasts a wheelbase extended by 150 mm, providing a significant increase in interior space compared to the standard model. One of the most noticeable changes is the six-seat configuration, featuring a 2+2+2 layout with independent captain’s chairs in the second row and a walk-through aisle for easy access to the back seats.
In South Korea, the Model Y L is being positioned as a family SUV option for those seeking an alternative to larger domestic electric vehicles. With a starting price of around 64.99 million won, the new variant is eligible for government electric vehicle subsidies, making it an attractive choice for environmentally-conscious consumers.
The interior of the Model Y L has also been revamped to meet the latest technological standards. It now includes a larger 16-inch central touchscreen and a dedicated 8-inch entertainment screen for rear-seat passengers. Despite the increased size, Tesla has optimized the aerodynamics of the vehicle to maintain efficiency, achieving an impressive range of up to 681 km on a single charge for the Long Range trim.
This regional rollout is part of Tesla’s strategic move to capture the premium family vehicle segment in markets where larger crossovers and MPVs are in high demand. Showrooms in Japan began showcasing the Model Y L on April 3, with sales set to commence nationwide after a brief public viewing period.
With its innovative design, enhanced interior features, and impressive range, the Model Y L is poised to make a significant impact in the Asian market, further solidifying Tesla’s position as a leader in the electric vehicle industry.
