Tesla has recently made changes to its Rider Terms of Service, specifically lowering the minimum age for passengers in its Robotaxi service from 13 to 8 years old. This update allows children as young as 8 to ride in a Tesla Robotaxi, as long as they are accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or an authorized adult for the entire duration of the trip. These new rules apply to both the dedicated Robotaxi service and the FSD (Supervised) Rideshare platform, ensuring the safety and well-being of young passengers.
All users of the Tesla app are required to review and agree to the updated Robotaxi Terms of Service, Rider Rules, and Privacy Notices in order to remain in compliance with the new age and supervision requirements. By continuing to use the Tesla app, customers are automatically accepting these new guidelines.
This policy change comes as Tesla continues to expand its ride-hailing operations in 2026. The Robotaxi network was initially launched in Austin, Texas in June 2025, and has since logged nearly 700,000 paid miles while expanding its services. The network currently operates in two modes: Ramping Unsupervised in Austin, Texas, where vehicles are operating fully driverless, and Supervised in the Bay Area of California, where a human safety driver is required in the vehicle.
Tesla has announced plans to launch the Robotaxi service in seven additional U.S. cities during the first half of 2026, including Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Las Vegas. In preparation for this expansion, Tesla is also gearing up for the production of the Cybercab, a purpose-built vehicle designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing without traditional steering wheels or pedals.
