Rivian made headlines back in 2024 when they first unveiled the R2, a midsize electric SUV, with a starting price of $45,000. This price point was seen as groundbreaking, offering a competitive option in the market for electric vehicles. Fast forward to today, at SXSW, Rivian has finally shared more details about the pricing and specifications of the R2.
CEO RJ Scaringe described the R2 as one of the most important launches for the company. While the base model is still set at $45,000, it is expected that most customers will end up paying more for additional features and upgrades. The first version to hit the market will be the dual-motor Performance trim, priced at $59,485. This version boasts 656 horsepower, 609 lb-ft of torque, a 0-60mph time of 3.6 seconds, and an EPA-estimated range of 330 miles.
The Performance trim comes loaded with features such as Compass Yellow brake calipers, Esker Silver exterior paint, premium interior with Birch wood accents, and heated/ventilated/massaging seats. It also includes Rivian’s 975-Watt Premium Audio system and the unique rear-drop glass feature.
For those looking for even more, Rivian offers a Launch Package that includes a lifetime subscription to the Autonomy Plus package, hands-free driving, a tow package for increased towing capacity, and exclusive exterior and key fob options.
The R2 Performance also features 21-inch Liquid Tungsten wheels, Dynamic Adventure Lighting with Matrix LED headlights, and a rechargeable Torch flashlight embedded in the door frame. Customers can expect a range of drive modes, including Rally, Soft Sand, Sport, and Launch Mode.
The R2 lineup will also include a Premium trim starting at $55,485 and a Standard (Long Range) trim starting at $49,985, with different power outputs, range estimates, and features. The most budget-friendly option, the Standard version priced at $45,000, is set to launch in late 2027.
Rivian has equipped the R2 with cutting-edge technology, including 5G connectivity, a 65MP camera and radar system, and an Autonomy Plus package for Level 2 Plus hands-free driving. The vehicle also features a 200 TOPS edge AI compute, a voice assistant, haptic steering wheel dials, and dual displays.
In terms of size and dimensions, the R2 is designed to compete in the midsize SUV segment, offering a more compact option compared to the larger R1S. The fold-flat seating system allows for versatile cargo space and potential sleeping arrangements.
Overall, Rivian is confident that the R2 will be a hit in the EV market, with plans to deliver thousands of units by the end of 2026. The company is banking on the R2’s affordability, design, and features to attract a wide range of customers and establish itself as a major player in the electric vehicle industry.
