Transforming the Night Sky: A Look at SpaceX’s Starbase Facility in Boca Chica, Texas
Elon Musk recently shared a captivating nighttime photograph of SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, showcasing the rapid evolution of this launch complex into one of the most ambitious in history.
The image reveals two towering Starship launch pads dominating the coastal skyline. Pad B now boasts its fully erected tower, OLIT-3, standing at an impressive 474 feet tall. This tower features an integrated water-cooled flame trench, signaling a shift towards high-cadence launch operations.

Meanwhile, Pad 2 is nearing hardware completion with upgraded chopstick arms, a new chilldown vent system, and protective doors on all 20 hold-down arms. These enhancements prepare the site for the powerful exhaust of up to 33 Raptor 3 engines.
SpaceX has expanded the Starbase launch site, adding LNG liquefaction plants, propellant storage facilities, and ground support infrastructure. This expansion aligns with the company’s vision for increased launch capabilities.
In a significant civic development, Starbase gained official city status in May 2025, with SpaceX employees serving as elected officials. This designation streamlines launch approvals and gives SpaceX control over local infrastructure decisions.
The FAA has approved a substantial increase in annual launches from Starbase, paving the way for missions to the Moon, Department of Defense operations, Starlink satellite deployment, and Elon Musk’s Mars colonization ambitions.
As Starbase emerges as a bustling spaceport, the potential for groundbreaking space exploration and commercial activities continues to soar.
