Revolt Systems, a California-based company, has taken a bold step in the world of classic car restoration by converting a 1965 Ford Mustang into an electric vehicle using Tesla parts. While some purists may argue that such a conversion takes away from the original character of the car, there’s no denying the immense power and performance that an electric drive unit can provide.
The vintage Mustang, now equipped with a refurbished and heavily modified Tesla Model S Large Drive Unit and high-voltage battery pack, boasts an impressive 600 hp when fully charged. This power, coupled with the car’s upgraded handling and performance, has transformed the once lackluster pony car into a true powerhouse on the road.
Eddy Borysewicz, the founder of Revolt Systems, explains that the decision to mount the electric motor in the front of the Mustang was out of necessity due to the Roadster Shop chassis upgrade, which was originally intended for an LS engine. The battery pack, on the other hand, is strategically placed under the floor and in the trunk to achieve a perfect 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles.
To further enhance the Mustang’s performance on the track, a Torque Trends 1.9:1 reduction box was added to the driveline, doubling the torque delivered to the wheels. The car is also equipped with QA1 coilovers for improved cornering, as well as a Baer braking system with regenerative braking for superior stopping power.
While the Tesla-powered 1965 Mustang has received praise for its impressive performance and handling, it does have one major drawback. The Tesla battery, while capable of delivering the full 600 hp at full charge, experiences severe voltage sag under heavy acceleration when the battery is only half charged. This issue has prompted Revolt Systems to develop its own battery setup that can sustain high voltages for longer periods while maintaining a smaller footprint.
Despite its drawbacks, the Tesla-powered 1965 Mustang has made waves since its debut at SEMA in 2021. Revolt Systems continues to improve the car, using it as a test mule for the company’s other projects. While the journey to perfecting an electric classic car may have its challenges, the end result is undeniably impressive, showcasing the potential for electric conversions in the world of vintage automobiles.
