- Improved efficiency for the refreshed iX electric crossover
- 2026 iX to introduce three new model designations
- Enhanced suspension tuning by BMW
If you’ve been keeping up with EVs, BMW’s Neue Klasse should ring a bell. This term is used by BMW to categorize its new generation of electric vehicles, starting with the iX3 crossover set to debut later this year, followed by a version of the 3-Series sedan.
The refreshed 2026 BMW iX marks a step towards this new class of EVs. Unveiled in 2022, BMW’s electric crossover comes with notable enhancements to its battery packs, propulsion systems, and other internal components. However, detailed information will only be revealed during its global debut in late January.
During a short test drive near BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina factory, the new iX exhibited improved comfort and a wider range between its sporty and comfortable driving modes. Changes to its exterior design seemed to blend the eco-style of the discontinued i3 hatch with the bold elements of BMW’s SUVs.
Spartanburg stands as BMW’s largest factory globally, producing the X3 and various larger crossover SUVs for worldwide distribution. However, the iX will continue to be manufactured at Plant Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria, Germany.
The 2026 iX is expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2025 with three distinct models, each reflecting a different performance level in typical BMW fashion.

2026 BMW iX battery and motor unit enhancements
All three models will feature dual-motor all-wheel drive, with the new base model being the iX xDrive45. The 2025 BMW iX entry point is the xDrive40, boasting a 71-kWh battery pack and a maximum range of 219 miles according to EPA ratings.
Anticipate a larger battery pack and increased range for the 2026 iX xDrive45.
Rumors suggest that the current iX xDrive50 will evolve into the iX xDrive60 in 2026, while the M60 will transform into the M70. These models are expected to feature larger battery packs, potentially retaining prismatic cells instead of switching to cylindrical cells seen in the Neue Klasse EVs.
The Neue Klasse vehicles will adopt an 800-volt architecture, while the iX will maintain its 400-volt system with efficiency improvements for faster charging. The 2025 BMW iX could achieve a 10-80% charge in 40 minutes on a 195 kW DC fast charger.
Similar to Neue Klasse vehicles, the 2026 BMW iX might utilize silicon anodes for greater energy density and faster charging rates, potentially leading to extended range. Additional enhancements include friction-optimized wheel bearings, energy-efficient headlights, and improved inverter technology for enhanced performance.

2026 BMW iX expected to be 10% more efficient
The 2025 iX xDrive50 achieves an EPA-rated range of 309 miles with 20-inch wheels. BMW claims a 10% efficiency boost for the new model, potentially increasing the range to 340 miles for the 2026 BMW xDrive60 with fuel-efficient wheels equipped with low-rolling resistance tires.
While the 2025 M60 offers a range of 285 miles, the 2026 M70 could reach the 310-315 mile range. Details regarding the xDrive45’s battery size remain undisclosed.

Driving Experience of the 2026 BMW iX
The performance figures for the M70 and xDrive60 variants of the 2026 iX are yet to be confirmed. The iX xDrive60 exhibited impressive acceleration and power delivery during a test drive, offering a balance between performance and comfort modes.
Improvements in handling and suspension tuning have been made across the iX lineup, with the iX xDrive60 showcasing refined hydraulic dampers for a smoother ride. The vehicle demonstrated good handling at highway speeds and reduced cabin noise.
Steering enhancements have also been implemented, providing a better feel between sport and comfort settings. The M70 is expected to feature a two-axle air suspension with adaptive dampers, retaining the distinctive iron butterfly grille design.
A new M Sport package is introduced for the 2026 iX, offering enhanced aesthetics and performance features. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, welcome lighting, heated seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system. Optional upgrades include a glass roof, automatic soft-close doors, and the latest iDrive system integrated into a digital instrument cluster.
The 2026 iX presents a fresh perspective on BMW’s electric vehicle lineup, positioning itself within the evolving Neue Klasse generation. Further details will be unveiled in late January.
