- Volvo’s 2025 lineup sees the EC40 hatchback skipping the model year
- The XC40 Recharge electric crossover returns as the EX40 with minor upgrades
- Pricing and specifications remain consistent, with dual-motor versions priced at just $1,750 more on the EX40
The rebranded 2025 Volvo EX40 electric crossover is soon to be available at U.S. dealerships, while its coupe-like counterpart will not be released this year.
In an official statement unveiling the pricing for the full 2025 lineup, Volvo confirmed that the EC40 will make a comeback in 2026, leaving the EX40 as the sole offering with its traditional design. The EC40 stands out with its lower roofline and fastback-style rear end.
The EX40 and EC40 were previously known as the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, respectively, but have been renamed as part of a brand-wide rebranding strategy. Volvo is phasing out the Recharge designation for both electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, opting for callout letters to distinguish EV models. The EX signifies SUVs like the EX40, while EC is reserved for electric coupes like the EC40. The EM label is designated for electric minivans, with the EM90 being the sole model in this category currently available in the Chinese market.

These two compact models are built on the CMA architecture, shared with the Polestar 2 and the gasoline-powered Volvo XC40. The XC40 continues with a standard mild-hybrid powertrain for the 2025 model year. The electric CMA models switched from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive for the 2024 model year, with dual-motor all-wheel drive options remaining available for 2025.
The single-motor EX40 models produce 248 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, featuring an 82-kWh battery pack. Dual-motor versions boast 402 hp and 494 lb-ft, requiring a 78-kWh battery pack. The single-motor models offer an EPA range of 296 miles, while the dual-motor models are rated at 260 miles.
The only notable change for the 2025 EX40 is the increase in DC fast-charging power from 200 kW to 205 kW. While Volvo has not confirmed the inclusion of a NACS port for the 2025 model, it is planned for future EVs in the lineup. Access to Tesla Superchargers for existing CCS-equipped vehicles, facilitated by adapters, was introduced late last year.

2025 Volvo EX40 (Europe spec)
Prices for the EX40 remain consistent, starting at $53,795 for the base single-motor Core trim (inclusive of a $1,295 destination charge). Additional Plus and Ultra trims are available at $56,595 and $60,295, respectively. All-wheel drive can be added for an extra $1,750 across all trim levels.
Within the Volvo electric crossover range for 2025, the EX40 is positioned between two new models. The EX90, a three-row electric crossover, serves as the brand’s flagship EV. The EX30, delayed due to tariffs, is the entry-level offering priced at $46,195 for the initial dual-motor configuration, with a more affordable single-motor variant set to launch later in the year.
