Sporty electric vehicles often struggle with weight issues, but Porsche has managed to maintain sharp handling and an engaging driving experience with the Macan Electric. The transition of Porsche’s popular Macan model to full electric power has both advantages and disadvantages in terms of dynamics, while significantly improving energy efficiency.
My recent test drive of the 2024 Macan Turbo Electric—a finalist for Green Car Reports’ Best Car To Buy 2024 award—highlighted Porsche’s success in creating a sporty and engaging vehicle, despite its substantial weight of nearly 5,400 pounds.

Macan Electric introduces the PPE platform
A decade ago, Porsche had to modify the platform for the gasoline Macan to achieve the desired handling characteristics. This time, with the Macan Electric, Porsche has introduced the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture from the beginning. The result is a platform that embodies the Porsche character, with a nearly perfect front-to-rear weight balance of 48:52.
The PPE platform accommodates an 800-volt, 100-kwh battery in the Macan Electric, delivering 576 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque from a duo of permanent-magnet motors. The Macan Electric also features an innovative rear-wheel steering system that enhances agility and stability.

Macan Turbo Electric: Unmistakably Porsche Driving Experience
Despite minimal changes to the platform, the Macan Electric features Porsche-tailored suspension tuning and a host of performance enhancements to deliver a truly Porsche-like driving experience, especially in the top-tier Turbo model. The Macan Electric is equipped with air suspension, adaptive dampers, and a range of performance features that contribute to its dynamic capabilities.
My test drive of the Turbo model included optional rear-wheel steering and high-performance Pirelli P Zero Corsa summer tires, enhancing both agility and grip. The Macan Electric performed exceptionally well on both the track and twisty roads, offering a familiar yet unique driving experience.
The battery’s placement and weight had a noticeable impact on the Macan Electric’s handling, providing both benefits and challenges. On the track, the low center of gravity and advanced suspension technology enabled precise and responsive cornering, although the weight transfer was palpable. The brakes performed admirably, while the tires showed signs of wear after extended track use.
Remarkably, track sessions had minimal impact on battery life or performance, with the Macan Turbo Electric maintaining its performance throughout the sessions.
