Tesla Energy recently announced a major milestone, with over 1 million Powerwalls now installed worldwide. The Powerwall, first launched in May 2015, has become one of the most popular home energy storage systems globally. Production began at Giga Nevada in 2017, with the introduction of the next-generation Powerwall 3 in September 2023. The 1 millionth unit was produced on June 2 of this year and is currently being installed at a customer’s home.
The global Powerwall fleet now spans 30 countries, providing a total of 6.7 GW of battery capacity. This amount of energy is enough to power an entire country like Singapore. Collectively, Tesla Powerwalls have delivered 17.3 TWh of clean energy from solar sources, helping homeowners avoid over 21 million power outages.
To celebrate this achievement, Tesla has introduced a new feature in the Tesla app that counts down to the 1 millionth Powerwall installation. This feature gives Powerwall owners a glimpse into how their systems have contributed to the global fleet and the transition to sustainable energy. Alex Guichet, the Tesla app designer, highlighted the importance of sustainable abundance and how Powerwall owners are playing a crucial role in accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
Tesla has also paid out over $60 million in Virtual Power Plant (VPP) earnings to date, with individual homes contributing significant amounts of energy back to the grid. The growing demand for Tesla’s home battery system is evident, with sales surging in countries like Australia. In July 2025 alone, Tesla sold 4,000 Powerwalls in Australia, underscoring the increasing importance of this technology in solar-powered homes and grid support programs worldwide.
